The Wave Is The Worst Thing In Sports

On Saturday night I was at Fenway Park to watch Chris Sale and the Boston Red Sox take on Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers. It was an awesome night and a pretty fun game as the Sox won 11-3. But one thing I saw really bugged me, and it has at almost every baseball game I’ve been to in Boston for the last few years. It was “the wave.”

The wave seems to only happen in Boston, unless I’m mistaken. I’ve been to baseball games in Los Angeles, San Diego, Cleveland, Baltimore, Washington and New York and never seen it. But in Boston for some reason, the wave gets started up at about the sixth inning without fail. The worst part is, it’s always when the Red Sox are in the field.

The wave is meant to distract the pitcher and the fielders yet for some reason Boston fans break it out at the wrong times. I hate to sound like the grumpy baseball fan that hates fun, but the wave sucks. It makes me irrationally angry and it’s even worse that Boston seems to be the only crowd dumb enough to do it. It’s stupid no matter what the time, but it’s even worse that there are so many fans who have no idea what it’s for and when to do it.

Every time the wave gets started up at Fenway I just roll my eyes. As a kid I used to do it because I had no idea about it and just thought it was fun. But now I sit because any self-respecting baseball fan that participates in that is out of their mind. I definitely sound like the Ebenzer Scrooge of ballpark gimmicks, but I’m not. I love Sweet Caroline and Take Me Out To The Ballgame. Hitting a beach ball through the stands is always fun. The wave though, is an abomination.
