It’s early in the season, I’m well aware of that. I’m trying not to be one of those guys that gets worked up and analyzes every loss my team takes. I am REALLY trying. Though I’m not exactly pushing the panic button yet, I think I’m ready to say that I’m uncomfortable with the Red Sox offense.
There are a bunch of reasons not to be worried, I get that. It’s still April and the bats often start slow. Once it gets warmer, balls start jumping out of the yard at a breakneck pace. You could even just make the excuse that the Red Sox have not been able to get into a rhythm all month. They’ve had injuries and illness and rainouts all over the place. Even now, they are depleted across the infield and are starting Josh Rutledge along side Marco Hernandez. What do you expect? It’ll all come together soon, don’t worry.
But those are all excuses, and excuses don’t win ball games. The lack of pop in this lineup right now is frightening. The fact that Hanley Ramirez has ONE home run and the team has only eleven all together is not good. Hanley, you have one job now and that is to hit the baseball. If he doesn’t get going here soon, this is going to stop flying under the radar and the heat is going to turn up on him.
There are things to like about this team and there are reasons to be optimistic moving forward. But the bats need to start coming to life because I can’t watch another Chris Sale start where he gets no support. I also can’t take seeing a guy like Drew Pomeranz go out and pitch great only to draw the loss. Regardless of who it is, it was Rick Porcello last night, when you see a pitcher do his job well and everyone else just does nothing, you lose your mind.
I’m not saying they won’t turn it around, because they probably will. I’m just feeling a little uncomfortable right now. We’re getting to the point where things need to change because the sample size is getting bigger and the criticism will get louder. I never thought I’d be writing about how a Red Sox team needs their offense to pick up the pitchers but here I am. Save me David Ortiz!
