The Boston Red Sox have made a major move on deadline day, but it is not a trade. The Red Sox are promoting 22-year-old outfielder Andrew Benintendi to the major league roster according to Evan Drelich of the Boston Herald. Last year’s first round pick will make the jump from Double-A Portland to the majors as he’ll join the team in Seattle tomorrow.
After his name circulated in trade speculation surrounding a package for White Sox Chris Sale, Boston’s number two prospect will join the major league club and attempt to jolt some life into an otherwise stagnant left field position. This coming off an epic 4-for-5 performance on Sunday afternoon where Benintendi belted a pair of homers and doubled twice.
In 63 games in Portland, Andrew Benintendi is slashing .295/.357/.515 with 8 homers and 44 runs driven in. He was even better during the month of July slashing .329/.406/.635 with 4 homers and 20 RBIs over that 24-game stretch.
General Manager Mike Hazen has already confirmed the report that Benintendi is indeed on his way to join the big league club. This was the perfect time for Boston as they feel the 22-year-old former Golden Spikes Award recipient is ready to handle the day-to-day life of a big leaguer.
Dave Dombrowski did make one deal on the day acquiring LHP Fernando Abad from Minnesota. Add to that the trades for Brad Ziegler, Aaron Hill, Michael Martinez and Drew Pomeranz and it’s clear that Dombrowski and his staff have put the Red Sox in the best position to compete for not only the division, but a championship this season. The promotion of Benintendi will sure-up the one spot with a lingering question mark and should pay dividends in big-time games down the stretch.
The Andrew Benintendi Era has begun for the Boston Red Sox. I have been high on this guy since the day he was drafted and he has remained untouchable in my eyes, now it’s time to sit back and drink it all in. The bonafide stud has arrived.
